Its true, Higham School is officially 175 years old this year, and there will be a special service to celebrate the anniversary.
The service will include the Sunday School and Junior Choir annual awarding of prizes. Following the service there will be an afternoon tea for everyone present.
You�d be right in thinking that the current building isn�t that old. The original school was, of course, what is now referred to as the village hall, a role it has taken since 1988.
This is where, if you look upwards, the present school takes its logo, as it is an image of the bell tower standing astride the roof of what is now the village hall.

Surprisingly, and this shows how times have changed, the school was originally built at a cost of �198 5s 6p (that wouldn�t get you the front door these days) and was opened in 1838, the money having been raised by public subscription.
It remained in use until 1970, at which point the new school building was opened at a cost of �40,000. (that might just build a single classroom today).
Those of you who are not familiar with our village will not be aware that the two school buildings, old and new, lay close to one another and are only separated by the church itself. This gives Higham a real sense of character and community as, coming from either direction, you pass the three buildings standing proudly together.
Many visitors to the Higham Arts and Crafts Exhibition or Scarecrow Festival comment on how lucky we are to have these three buildings at the very heart of the village.
